A Place for cultural practice from dawn to Dusk

Kalajyoti was established on 7th January 2000 in the peri – urban area of South 24 Parganas, at Zilla Rajpurenvisioned by the Internationally famed Odissi exponent, Choreographer and Guru --Smt Monalisa Ghosh, supplemented by the joint efforts of a small group of like minded individuals - stalwarts from the field of Bussiness world, Architect and famed professionals . The ambience of Gurukul cradled by the serenity of nature provides the appropriate environment for Indian Culture to flourish.

Kalajyoti aims at renewing the traditional harmony of Indian Traditional Art, Music and Dance and in fact all performing arts exposing today’s children and youth to the high philosophical aspects , deep history of Indian art and culture and learn to respect the values of life , providing the right ambience where art and culture can thrive. Training and workshops are also provided in Indian Literature, mythology, Sanskrit, music, aesthetics, history of dance, philosophy, spiritual thought and dance theory. Kalajyoti believes all individuals need more exposure to Indian traditional culture for developing to be a successful in life with compassion, and self confidence.

Residency Programme for Visiting Students from Foreign Countries

Kalajyoti has hosted interested guests and students from all over the World, for learning any form of Indian Culture, languages, yoga and others since the year 2000, with a comfortable living following the Western systems, hygienic food and mineral water. Apart from daily practice of the respective art forms, sight seeing and cultural tours and visiting performances.

With number of choreographies and Compositions – the students are exposed to the stage and audience both as solo exponents and be a part of critically acclaimed choreography nationally and Internationally. Moreover with the yearly seminars, functions and workshops it aims at creating a motivation amongst the youngsters to exchange and learn the values of life, through the practice of these ancient culture of India.

Regular examinations are organized yearly with certificates from renowned Examination Centre. Talented students are initiated to compete for scholarship examinations by the government of India. Seminars, conferences, symposia are organized and Awards are given to the outstanding Students. Talented Students are sponsored in foreign countries. And Students of Kalajyoti are promoted to perform in Festivals and Competitions inland ,where they have made their Guru proud by winning several awards and accolades.


Kalajyoti regularly organises competition and performances at Kalamandap ‘Kalajyoti Mahotsav’ every year, in arts, vocal, dance, and recitation aiming to encourage, involve, engage young talents from all over India, peri urban, and rural Districts to participate, motivate, and uphold the Cultural Spirit .


Since the year 2013 , In the Grand finale of Kalajyoti Mahotsav , our Kalajyoti in all humility, honoured the stalwart personalities who have dedicated their lives in advancing several fields of performing arts, with their penchant dedication and sincerity to reach the mark of excellence with the Kalaratna Samman Ceremony.

Apart from these culture related activities, counselling for the girls and save them from exploitation are integrated on topics – importance of education, fight against child marriage, gain self sufficiency and fight against domestic violence. For the financially challenged youth, Kalajyoti is imbibing a ray of hope to fulfil their dreams to be recognized as proficient cultural performers in the days to come. They are groomed to earn their living in future through cultural activities ---- and, we hope, they in turn will help other financially challenged children in future! They are provided free grooming in English, etc. Financially deprived students are trained and provided earning opportunity.


ACHIEVEMENTS:


  • Few disciples have received senior Scholarship by CCRT.
  • Students of Kalajyoti were invited to participate in prestigious choreography of ‘Strains’ created by Director Leo Sprecksel and Guru Monalisa Ghosh combining Netherlands contemporary and Odissi.
  • Kalajyoti was invited to inaugurate The Holland India Dance Festival in the Hague with Guru Monalisa Ghosh and 2 senior disciples .
  • Kalajyoti sponsored few senior disciples to be introduced as successful performers of Odissi in Europe.
  • After completing 15 years Kalajyoti established and inaugurated it’s own Theatre – Kalamandap- The Ethnic Theatre, amidst natural ambience, with green room, and all necessary requirements . Kalamandap was inaugurated by Director of Doordarshan, Renowned Scholar and Critic, Foreign Ambassadors, Officers of EZCC, Legendary Musician and famous personalities from different Cultural world on 13th April 2019.

A few words about Monalisa Ghosh

Monalisa Ghosh

Monalisa Ghosh, one of the leading exponents of Odissi Dance, choreographer and Guru, had been groomed in Cuttack under Guru Ramani Ranjan Jena continued under Guru Raghunath Dutta and gained maturity under the legendary Guru Padmavibhusan Kelucharan Mahapatra and Padmashri Smt. Sanjukta Panigrahi.


Her dance has been acclaimed for classicism, lyricism and spiritual expression. Monalisa has performed all over India sharing stage with leading maestros, in prestigious dance festivals and conferences since the year 1983 . She has made immense contribution in spreading Bharatiya Sanskriti in every corners of Germany , Austria, Netherlands, with its spirituality and philosophy since 1990. Her performances and lecture demonstrations educated the Western audience on the depth of Indian Culture – in Italy, France, U.S.A., U.K., Tajikistan, Sweden,Denmark,Spain,U.A.E. and Bangladesh. Participated in important festivals all over Europe since last 3 decades. She has Received wide critical acclaim in print and television Medias both Nationally and Internationally.

Monalisa Ghosh is a National program grade Artist of Doordarshan and a senior empanelled artist of the ICCR . A senior empanelled Guru of EZCC. She serves as an expert Committee Member in various important cultural committees under Ministry Of Culture, both Central and State Government.She is Head of the Department- Odissi Dance, Suranandan Bharati and in the expert committee of Masters Examination of Odissi Dance in Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata. To name a few of the awards received by Guru Monalisa Ghosh are – Nrutyashri, Singarmani, Outstanding young person of Calcutta 1989, Nrityanandan, Nritya Shiromoni, IBC Award for Women of Excellence – 2020,Bongo Gourab Sanman, Natyamayookham, The RDD Award in Mumbai in 2023 February.


To restore and preserve the rich Indian Classical dance form – Odissi, in it’s pure form - she is one of the first contemporary Odissi dancer of Kolkata, to establish a residential Gurukul following the ancient Gurukul system, inaugurated in 2003 February, in a serene natural atmosphere, named Kalajyoti..

Students from India and foreign countries live in natural surroundings maintaining the Gurukul tradition. It is a matter of pride that apart from training financially deprived students of India Guru Monalisa Ghosh carries forward her humanitarian work, training Indian dance to the Refugees from Ukraine, Syria, and other war struck countries - during her yearly tours . Monalisa’s choreography on women empowerment, Chitrangada, Promila – The empowered woman, From Ramayan, Geet Govindam, and on patriotic themes have received recognition from The Ministry of Culture , Government of India.

Since last 3 decades she is spreading the importance of Indian Classical Dance for physical and mental well being as a Yogic Sadhana along with the joyful, spiritual, philosophical, and aesthetic aspects - in several countries of Europe, in Universities, schools , old age homes and renowned Theatres through performances, lecture demonstrations and Workshops.She has Received wide critical acclaim in print and television Medias both Nationally and Internationally. Samskar Bharati West Bengal , under the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, awarded the prestigious NATARAJ SAMMAN to Bidushi Monalisa Ghosh in 2024 April .


Twice a year Monalisa Ghosh conducts Odissi Dance training in Vienna, several cities of Germany and Netherlands, regularly , dedicated to her disciples in India, performing widely her outstanding group choreography and Solo presentations.
